Ratchanok Intanon has been the hottest ladies singles player in recent years. Amidst her record book, which is not exactly short, the miraculous teen has managed to procure one of the few most reputable titles there is in the world of badminton, the World Championship champion, at 18 years of age, and won three consecutive World Junior titles in 2009-2011. Truly extraordinary.6 z5 O1 {. W4 d8 S! e3 G
* W% w. f1 ^- h) z3 D' u1 C What's behind her extraordinary results and popularity, is her marvellous attacking game. Her debut in continental team competition was an immediate classic against Wang Xin, the foremost formidable Chinese left-hander, where she left the badminton audience amazed of her forehand and over-the-head smashes, despite not being able to take the 3-game match at the very end. She is able to attack with power, precision, and deception all at the same time. And comparing to other attacking-centred ladies singles, her game's unique attractiveness lies in her skillful ability to generate power in her shots. The whole process - the scissor kick jump, the contracting of her abdomen and back muscle, the finalisation of her wrist pronation - all seems absolutely effortless, yet the shuttle just rockets off the stringbed, plumbing onto the lines, leaving her opponents desperate and stranded. Furthermore, such impressive shots are all embedded within a traditionally women's framework of badminton, which means there are no flashes of men's game (like a two-footed jump smash) breaking in. This strengthens her femininity and avoids being picked at by the (predominantly male) audience's subconscious but hard-wired gender stereotypes (the famous victim of such stereotype: Serena Williams). Hence, even if she hasn't won so many titles, she is bound to become popular in badminton.- U$ \+ C( V6 Q
1 u6 ?+ O9 i; d1 c! S As a young lady who is yet to have turned 20, her game is incredibly mature. Her defense has already come a long way since she first came to the adult level. But the long-time slump since her WC title has exposed a number of weaknesses among her game. The first and foremost that's been holding her up, is her net game. Ratchanok Intanon is famous for her sophisticated net game, which contains a salvo of holding and cross-court net shots. In other words, her net game focuses around one concept, that is, deception. However, she seems to be a little bit too possessed with it, and forget about what an attacking-minded player should really concentrate working on: pace. We hear the phrase "sudden injection of pace" all the time in singles, but the overdose of holding and cross court really makes that impossible from happening. Beyond that, it's her footwork. Now, her footwork has long been hailed as one of the most graceful in tour, tagged with superlatives like "balletic" or "accurate" by commentators. However, to me, she still has room to improve in her footwork's flexibility. She doesn't have to sprint diagonally all in three big steps; she could do with one or two smaller but quicker steps, to have better body control when she reaches for the net. Lee Chong Wei and Li Xuerui are the exemplars in this category. Last but not least, it's her stamina. As an often pedal-to-the-metal player, she really needs her fitness in profuse supply at all time. Her current risky shot-selection adds a lot of unforced errors to her game, which leads to more crunch time that shouldn't be there in the first place, and at that point, it's very simple: better fitness, better concentration, better chance winning.: Q) a8 w% ? t
2014 is in the book. Ratchanok Intanon did not win any BWF Superseries title this year. For her and her fans, that's undoubtedly devastating. Since 2013 WC, it's been a good 15-month period without winning a champion, and that proves the world is getting to know her, and some of them know her really well. Han Li and Liu Xin, players who are not exactly first-tier in the Chinese National team, have beaten her multiple times this year. The reproduction of last year's WC final resulted in two easy victories for Li Xuerui. Among the non-Chinese players, Ratchanok also had great difficulty against the more experienced Saina Nehwal and Bae Youn Ju. A whopping 17-year-old Japanese, the 1.56m Akane Yamaguchi, also gave Ratchanok a tonne of trouble, whilst shocking the world in the meantime, just like what Ratchanok did in 2013. With those strong opponents around, it is, to say the least, not straightforward for Ratchanok Intanon to achieve her ultimate ambition - winning an Olympic Gold and become World No. 1 - within the 2016 Rio period.

Fortunately, she is turning 20 next year in February, and at 20 Gong Ruina, Wang Lin, and Wang Shixian all made groundbreaking achievements, and there is no reason not to believe in Ratchanok could do the same. Fortunately, we are not her coach, nor her family. We are not stakeholders of her performance. What we cherish the most is not the winning and losing, but the exhilaration, the "what a rally!" sensation. And fortunately, in this post, we are able to pause the time, and review her past glory - which she personally cannot reside on. We wish this gradually taller, maturer Thai lady would always keep her smile on her face, and always stay at the fore front of badminton as long as possible, just like her personal idols Zhang Ning and Wang Yihan. That would be great for her, for us, and for badminton.1 l& g f1 W- v, z, `# Z- x
